How to move from teaching to product management

A product manager may interview users, review adoption signals, define a problem for design and engineering partners, prioritize a roadmap, and explain decisions to sales, support, and leadership. In an edtech company, credibility comes from understanding the classroom context without assuming every school works the same way.

A strong transition story does not claim that teaching and this role are identical. It shows the repeated work behind your classroom title: diagnosing a need, designing an approach, communicating with people, and improving it when the evidence changes.

• Turning learner observations into a clear problem statement.
• Balancing different needs while working within time and resource constraints.
• Facilitating decisions with families, colleagues, and school leaders.

Choose one or two gaps to address with work you can show. A small, well-explained project is more useful than a long list of courses because it gives you something concrete to discuss in an interview.

• Learn basic product discovery and prioritization vocabulary by analyzing real job descriptions.
• Create a short case study that identifies a learning problem, evidence, tradeoffs, and a proposed test.
• Practice describing outcomes without claiming product or engineering ownership you have not held.

Choose one edtech product you know well. Write a one-page case study about one learner or teacher problem it could solve better, including the evidence you would gather before proposing a change. Use it to start informed conversations, not to present yourself as an experienced product manager.
